You are definitely right about repairing the block. The block part # I came up with is CH18173 and it lists for $1,857.98. Ouch!!! Did the block freeze and crack? In some cases the block can be welded or brazed well enough for things to work. I have seen where JB Weld was used on a boat engine to repair a crack that lasted for several years. ....

Most areas have a specialty shop fairly close. A dealer or engine rebuilder would likely know one in your area.
The ease, cost and success depend a lot on where the crack is--ones below cylinder level are easier. Ones that involve water jackets may not be feasible to repair. Like Chief, I've heard of some JB weld repairs holding up for several years and brazed in chunks lasting indefinitely. My brother in law didn't have quite so good of luck with some sort of silica stuff he used to repair a cracked head on a gas engine but it did last awhile.
Tractor splitting an tear down seem like too much work for me to want to try an inexpensive patch up and I'd probably look for a shop that has equipment and experience doing that sort of work. A good shop will tell you if it isn't a feasible repair too. ....

Thanks for the quick response. Is the Part Number you refer to from JD? And yes the block froze and the crack is at the rear of the block running into the water jacket. ....

jwcasey, yes that is a JD part # for the block although guessed it was a low serial # block. You need to check the serial # of the tractor and figure accordingly. If you are doing the work yourself, I would try calling around to find a VERY experienced and reputable welding shop or a boat engine repair shop to take the block to for repair. It is worth a try. Other wise you are left with finding a used block or engine, or a rebuilt/new engine. None of which I am sure are very cheap. You might also want to check with your local JD dealer to see if they can recommend someone. Good luck. ....

There are a couple of used tractor parts suppliers around. I am not sure if they would have a used tractor block for a 950. A good uesd block is not a problem if you want to rebuild as high performance engine rebuilders of then look for high milage blocks to rebuild as they are completely stress relieved and make stronger engines.
Welding of a cast iron block is difficult as the whole block needs to be heated in an autoclave to stress relieve the weld area. There are some engine builders that are capable of doing this. Unfortunately the only one I know of right now is in White River VT. ....
